Now my friends in Pennsylvania can finally vote for someone they believe: a lunatic from Pittsburgh.

Great news indeed. Very soon, "that" party will only have some nut cases there and delusional log cabin gay republicans.
I think he did it so he could get re-elected so I don't know that the decision came down to anything more than selfishness on his part (winning re-election) as opposed to an ideological reason.
